To mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the GXB organized an outreach event promoted by the UCC+i (Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit). The team collaborated with CEIP Plurilingüe Nº 1 in Tui on a workshop dedicated to soil scientist Benita Silva Hermo, a pioneer in studying granite in Galician monuments and its biological colonization. Under the guidance of biologist Ledicia Taboada, chemist Sonia Barreiro, and GXB researcher Iria Fernández Silva, 1st- and 2nd-grade students learned to identify the most common rocks and minerals and their applications. The activity concluded with an educational field trip to explore the Church of Santo Domingo’s granite architectural heritage and observe the biodiversity that colonizes it. In this way, students discovered the honoree’s legacy while connecting geology to the history of their own municipality.
